Moods flashcards

Hi everyone!

Today I come with some flashcards I created to work feelings, moods and speaking as a routine everyday in class.

I use them with grades between 1st and 3rd of primary and first of all I show them the name of the moods at the same time that we do TPR to understand the meaning and associate the mood with an action.

In order, the moods presented are:

  • Happy
  • Sad
  • Tired
  • Angry
  • Scared
  • Thristy
  • Hungry
  • Hot
  • Cold
  • Nervous
  • Sick
Once they have learnt the action and the mood, I ask them everyday pointing to each picture: "How do you feel today?", so they have to answer "Today I feel ..." while doing the TPR too.
Later, I take advantage of this knowledge and in the assembly I ask them how they feel and why.

Another idea, something that I also do with all of them is asking them what do they do when they are... So the same way that we do the last part of the activity we do this one. The phrases that we say are:

  • When I'm happy I smile
  • When I'm sad I cry
  • When I'm tired I sleep
  • When I'm angry I stamp my feet
  • When I'm scared I run / I don't sleep
  • When I'm thirsty I drink
  • When I'm hungry I eat
  • When I'm hot I sweat
  • When I'm cold I shiver
  • When I'm nervous I bite my nails
  • When I'm sick I sneeze
Again this time we have an action associated to each action and mood. This part of the activity is great because when they feel confident they can add different things, for example some students tell me different actions as "When I'm hot I go to the swimming pool" or "When I'm hungry I eat a big hamburger"

Finally, these flashcards will help you if you want to play a mime game. You only have to choose one student and show him or her one mood. Then, the student must mime it and the rest will ask: "How do you feel today?". When they guess it they have to ask: "Are you ...?" and the student will reply with two structures: "Yes, I am / No, I'm not"

Of course, this is the way I use them, feel free to change it in order to adapt this material to the necessities and interests of your students. To get the material fill in the form you can find in the blog and as soon as possible I will send it to you.

I hope you find it useful! Share in comments if you use it or if you have new ideas to use it!

See you soon!

  1. Hello,
I love your speaking activity with flashcards. I would definitely use it in 1st and 2nd grade.
As well as you, I have a daily routine with my students. We talk about emotions among other things, but it´s true that we only leant or review vocabulary with the flashcards.
With your activity, you go a little bit further away, introducing your students a speaking activity from a really young age, in an unconscious way.
Probably with this dynamic activity you are helping them to gain confidence to face more difficult speaking situation in English.
Thank you for your great idea.
    Miriam.

    1. Hello Míriam,

Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked the activity. In my opinion, routines are really important to review vocabulary and practice speaking and my favourite way of doing it is using flashcards and encouraging them to speak in this way.

I hope you students love it and feel more confident speaking.

      See you soon!

  2. Dear Carolina,
What a cute blog! My first impresion when I've opened it has been like "Ooohh how cute it is!" The colours of the first image you see catch your eye immediately. And the structure is easy-follow as well.
It seems it's under construction yet, but the post about Moods flashcards seems very original. It is always difficult to talk about feelings with kids, and the way you have designed the activity makes it so easy...
Congratulations and thanks for sharing it.

    1. Hello Cristina!

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you liked the blog and the activity too. It is everything thanks to Canva, a wonderful ICT tool that I use to design lots of different materials and worksheets.

I hope you can do this activity with your students and they enjoy it!

      See you soon!

  3. Hello Carolina,
I was playing and practicing with your activities, and it was enjoyable.
As Cristina said, it is such a cute blog.
It is motivating for kids due to the colors and pictures.
The activities are original and let children learn English in an active and playful way.
I hope I can use these ideas in the future with students, especially "moods flashcards". I think feelings are one of the most important things for humans and kids, so we have to take them into account. And your idea lets us work on emotions in class every day.
    Thanks for sharing your ideas.

    1. Hello Marta,

Thank you so much for your positive comment! I agree that learning while having fun and enjoying is an amazing way of learning and I always try to do activities in class that motivate the students and make them feel engage to their learning process.

I also find very important to work on emotions and feelings with them and in my experience this activity is very useful to do it. I hope you can do it with your students and they enjoy it!

      See you soon!

  4. Dear Carolina, What a wonderful blog you have created! My first impression about it is that it's very attractive, you have used beautiful design and colours! I was going through the activities that you have created, and this one caught my attention the most. Talking about emotions is essential, and combining English with emotions is great! Naming the emotions is the first step for a proper emotion regulation. Many schools see the importance of teaching about emotions and look for activities to integrate them in their day to day actions. There are also many parents willing to learn about it, so it could also be useful for families with kids. Congratulations for this great job!

Delicious food writing

Hello everyone and welcome to my restaurant! As you already know I'm a big fan of Canva and here I am again one of my creations.  The aim of this worksheet is to practice writing about food with primary 1 or 2 students. First of all it is necessary that the students have learnt some vocabulary about food so, later, we can give them this worksheet to practice it. They have to write some food they love, like and don't like and then, choose three of them and draw a picture in each of the boxes given.  I've used it with my students and they really enjoyed doing the activity. You can ask them also, when they finish, to show it to the rest of the classmates to make it more motivating and to practice also the speaking skill.  I hope you like it and find it useful, again, if you want to have access to the resource, contact me in the form and I'll send it as soon as possible.  Let me know in the comments your opinion about it.  See you soon!

Reading computers

Hello everyone! Today we're going to practice a reading activity! As our students are digital natives, I've looked for a text about computers, for them to know more about this tool they use everyday almost everytime. You can find the text in the following link: https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/read-write/reading-practice/level-3-reading/computers To start the activity we can ask the students some questions about the creation of computers to see their knowledge, like: when they were created, by who, where, how they were at the beginning... we can also ask them about mobile phones, Internet...  Later, we will read the text and check doubts together. Also, we will explain them some vocabulary that we find interesting for them to know, such as "store" or "program". We can also look for pictures or further information about the things that are mentioned in the text, so they can find the activity more interesting.  Finally, I have prepared a Kahoot with
